Chen Xiaoguang, the vice cultural minister, gave an important speech. First of all, Vice Minister Chen expressed congratulations to graduates who have successfully finished study and thanks and respects to their hardworking tutors. Vice minister Chen gave his full affirmation to CNAA’s strategic vision, development structure and marvelous achievements in recent years. When talking about the cultivation of art talents, Vice Minister Chen said, “It has been arduous and splendid 30 years for CNAA’s Postgraduate School. In recent years, CNAA’s postgraduate education has developed quite rapidly with notable accomplishments. With approximately 1,000 students on the campus, the Postgraduate School has become a college of national level that has complete range of artistic disciplines and a sound teaching system to cultivate cultural and artistic talents.” He highly praised the valuable traits of CNAA tutors and students as reflected in donations and material supports to the affected regions of the disastrous Wenchuan earthquake, “CNAA’s talent education pays equal attention to ethic and learning, and the focus is not only on training skills and teaching knowledge, but also attaching importance to the cultivation of students’ ethic and human care. ‘Neither rich nor fame will be pursued so long as it benefits the nation.’ These actions that originate from emotion and show nobleness are just the content and essence of art. Before such a catastrophic disaster, our scholars, artists and postgraduates used their pens and brushes to express the whole nation’s sorrow and condolence for the victims in such forms as literature, painting, song and poem etc., which are indeed arts of supreme trueness, beauty and goodness.”
Following vice minister Chen, CNAA president and Party secretary Wang Wenzhang made a speech. Firstly, president Wang commended students of the Postgraduate School, “When the disaster occurred, you supported the affected regions and showed your love in various forms, which demonstrated the humanistic mind of young students of your generation, and your mother school and all tutors are proud of you! This is your honor, and also the honor of CNAA!” President Wang Wenzhang also joyfully told the attendees that, through years of efforts, our postgraduate education has gradually taken the central position of China’s art education. At present, CNAA has become a Chinese institution that has the most complete qualifications for enrolling art students and also the largest number of points of academic degrees. This year, our drama specialty was also listed as a key discipline for art education by Beijing Education Committee. When talking about discipline construction, he said, “In order to meet time and social needs, we’ve added new specialty directions such as Cultural Strategies, Cultural Policies, Cultural Industry and Non-Material Cultural Heritage etc. so as to improve discipline construction to the maximum extent. Meanwhile, our academy has also strengthened the cultivation of creation postgraduates and students of various art studios, and our good academic tradition not only enriches their theoretical basis but also helps their creative ability achieve significant development. For the moment, the 2008 CNAA Graduation Works Show of Art Studios is a comprehensive demonstration of our teaching fruits over the year.”
He also mentioned the Postgraduate School’s involvement in international exchange and cooperation in recent years. “Our international involvement in postgraduate education is speeding up over the years. In addition, our academy has also entered into cooperation and exchange relations with foreign universities such as American Nazareth University etc. and has successfully held the World Forefront Arts Forum, which has accumulated valuable experience for our international involvement in postgraduate education.”
Ms. Zi Huajun, the deputy director of Chinese Working Committee for Non-Material Cultural Heritage Protection and research fellow with Dance Institute, CNAA, represented master/doctor tutors to address the ceremony. She gave a very touching speech to the classmates. By use of her personal experience, she told the students always to be thankful as it will be the biggest spiritual resources throughout one’s life. When talking about tutoring students, she said, “It’s true I’m very strict with my students because they are most important in my mind and I’m always afraid they may be misled by my negligence. But I don’t ask students to follow the tutor’s opinions blindly and cite the tutor’s works. The tutor’s responsibility, firs of all, is to develop students’ potential, regulate the style of study, lead the research path and provide guidance on scientific methodology based on their knowledge accumulation and academic interest as well as their specialty and personality.” Finally, she told the participating graduates with emotion that, “If your tutors ever criticized you, they must do that as a result of their deep love and longsighted consideration for students, just like me. As time passes, all these criticisms will be ‘tender memories’ as Pushkin put it.” Zhang Jian, a 2008 doctor graduate, also made a speech on behalf of all graduates.
