Musicology of Chinese Academy of Art is the first batch of disciplines of doctoral degree award unit authorized by The Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (ADCSC). Musicology of Chinese Academy of Art represented by Yang Yinliu and Huang Xiangpeng, during the past 50 years, not only has theoretically established the integral framework of Chinese Musicology, but also matched it by collecting real musician instruments, music books and operns, recording materials in the folk; and makes it become the research center of Chinese Traditional Music.

  Among the collections of The Institution of Musicology of Chinese Academy of Art, the one that is worth being mentioned most is 7000-hour sound material. And most of them are extinct wonders, i.e. Erhu song of Moon Reflected in Two Springs played by A Bing, GuQin music of Flowing Water played by Guan Pinghu, Yang Yuanheng, Li TingShong, Se Laxi, Boyindelger, Feng Zicun and other songs played or performed by instrumental and folk maestros of 20 Century; and Twelve Muqam of Uygur, Nangma music of Tibetan, Chorus of Dong, Drum Music of Xi'an, Shifan Luogu of Southern Jiangsu and Eight Major Sets of Music of Shanxi and other sound treasures. UNESCO has granted these musical sound material as the first batch of Memory of World projects,which is one of the first batch of "representatives of intangible heritage".

  P.R. China’s first batch of graduate students of doctor and master degrees in Musicology graduated from here. Presently, the main research directions of Musicology are as follows: History of Chinese Music, Traditional Music, Ethnomusicology, Music Archaeology, Study of Instruments, Study of Musical Temperament and Aesthetics etc.
