Design Art is an art discipline with strong applicability, which is based on the study of design practice; and focuses on research of design art history and theory, design art practice. Its connotation is to follow the development law of mutual promotion between science and art to create lives, to perfect lives, to color lives and to enrich lives. Design Art is an open discipline as well; its goal is to realize the unification of practical functions and aesthetical ideals in the process of things making activities, which is playing important role in the material and spiritual life of people in modern society.

　　Design Art is a newly established discipline of Chinese Academy of Art and recruited first batch of doctoral students and master’s students in 2005. The main purpose of this subject is to cultivate graduate students’ essential qualities of independently researching the History and Theories of Design Art; and to train the students’ capabilities of creatively thinking, Art design, design practice and teaching. Design Art sets up Design Theory and Criticism, Design of Visual Communication and Theory, History of Design Art and Theory, Environment Design and Research and other theory-oriented majors; and Vision, Architecture, Fiber, Garment Design and other practice-oriented majors. On the basis of relying on its Design Art Theory research team, they have invited many famous experts, professors from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, and Beijing University of Clothing Technology as the tutors for the doctoral students and postgraduates, which open up broader development space for the integration and development of Design Art.
