

Chinese Traditional Operas of Chinese Academy of Art is the first batch of doctoral degree conferring unit discipline authorized by The Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (ADCSC). In the 50 years 'scientific research, this discipline forms its own features by linking theories with practice and combining literature research with field research; and undertakes comprehensive and systematic research from the views of stage Art and integrated Art, and formulates relatively mature and scientific theory system of Chinese Traditional Operas. In the earth 20th century, Mr. Wang Guowei settled the foundation of modern Chinese Operas with The History of Song and Yuan Dramas. After 1950s, Chinese Academy of Chinese Traditional Operas (predecessor of Institute of Chinese Traditional Operas, China Academy of Art) represented by Mei-Lanfang, Zhang Geng and Guo Hancheng, takes New China’s reform of Chinese Traditional Operas as opportunity, with the guidance of letting a hundred of flowers blossom and weeding through the old to bring forth the new, to link theoretical research with the reform of traditional operas and the construction of literature and arts closely; and research from various respects of literature, history, music, tune source operas, performance, direct, stage art to advance the study of operas to a new stage. Through years 'efforts, completed works are as follows: An Introduction To Chinese Traditional Operas, General Theory of Chinese Traditional Operas, Annals of Chinese Traditional Operas, Collection of Chinese Traditional Operas Music, Volume of Chinese Traditional Operas, Encyclopedia of China, Treatise Collection of Chinese Classical Operas, Modern Chinese Operas, On Drama Art etc.
Through years' cultivation, it has produced a great batch of graduate students of doctor and master degree, which not only continuously enriches its own unit with new blood, but also trains a batch of professional talents for the society. Present years, the development and research directions of Chinese Traditional Operas have gradually integrated, with the existing History of Chinese Traditional Operas, Theory on Chinese Traditional Operas, Aesthetics of Chinese Traditional Operas, Historical Comments on Quyi, Study of Drama Theory, the construction of the subject is enriched by adding Comparison of Drama, The Minority Drama, Creation of Traditional Operas; and realize to comprehensively cultivate postgraduate students. Chinese Traditional Operas has a professional teaching team with great reputation at home and abroad; those tutors have rigorous attitude of scholarship, nobility in personality charm and moral styles, which set the good foundation for the realization of providing high quality-oriented education for the postgraduates.
