China Art Academy (thereinafter referred to as CAA) has developed from a gradual incorporation of three research institutions: Chinese Academy of Traditional Operas,Chinese National Music Research Institute and Chinese Painting Research Institute. Ever since April 1951, when Chairman Mao Zedong wrote down the words "Let hundreds of flowers blossom and weed through the old to bring forth the new", CAA has a history of 54 years. At present, CAA has a large number of middle-aged and young scholars, forming an important group in art science and research and teaching. Relying on this team with boundless research abilities, CAA has achieved remarkable success in academic influence and value. For especially, in the fields of the Chinese traditional operas, Chinese fine arts, Chinese music, and artistic aesthetics, many foundation laying books have been written on the history and theory. Meanwhile, much has been accomplished in discovering, excavating, preserving and studying national art heritages. For instance, large quantities of excellent artistic heritages, including the national classic music work The Moon Reflected in the Second Spring, have been well kept by the efforts of the experts and scholars of CAA. For the recent years, CAA is trusted by the Ministry of Culture to apply KunQu art and ancient stringed musical instrument art to be registered as the masterpiece of "the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". Graduate education is another important function of CAA. Over the past 27 years, the graduate school of CAA has fostered a large number of excellent people of art theory. The enrollment rate has increased rapidly for the recent two years. In 2003, the Degree Committee of the State Council authorized CAA to confer Ph.D. and MA degrees. Till now, CAA is the national exclusive one that holds the conferrence rights of 8 art Ph.D and 9 MA degrees and is also has a mobile postdoctoral station.

To meet the new challenges and requirements of the new century, CAA is gradually forming a new development pattern of science research, art education and art creation. Over 600 staff members are spread over 12 institutions, 12 creation research centers, 11 magazines, the publishing house and the graduate school. Guided by Marxism and Leninism, Mao Zedong thought, Deng Xiaoping theory and "Three Representatives" developed by Jiang Zemin, all the staff members will spare no effort to build the CAA into a "first-class nationwide, well-known worldwide" art scientific research center, an art education center and an international art exchange center.
